Creativity loves boundaries
Today I wrote a list of core principles for my Bear creations. Things like:
- Simplicity
- Unity
- Lightness
If you also take into account that all add-ons are made to work both together and as standalone pieces, with or without the Bear Hug companion, it actually makes things quite difficult in all their simplicity. It creates boundaries, limits the options, and forces me to think outside the box.
I love it, and so does creativity.
The limitations fuel the creative fire. The tiny toolbox forces you to focus and widen your perspective. “How many uses can you think of for a brick”, and all that.
It’s inspiring. Challenging in a productive way.
It sounds contradictory, but if you’re stuck, the way forward might actually be to limit yourself. Some house rules might be exactly what helps you move past writer’s block.
For example, limiting your writing to a specific:
- Time
- Place
- Duration
- Length
- Topic
Give it a try. Play around.
You might be surprised by how freeing strict limits can be.
