The secret
When I arrived at one of the house inspections today, the owner was doing work in the garden.
She showed me around outdoors. The house was old, but everything looked like new. So much care had been put into everything.
Same thing indoors, not a single detail left to chance. She told me about all the precautions when it came to burglary, fire, and water damage. I didn’t have anything to add, everything was done by the book.
When we got upstairs, she demonstrated her loom and some of her creations. I was amazed. So impressive!
Next, it was time for the attic. Before I knew it, she had opened the hatch in the ceiling, brought out a ladder, climbed up and was waiting for me. I could hardly keep up.
When we got back down again, I just had to ask.
— How old are you, if I may ask?
— 81, she said with a calm smile on her face.
If someone had told me that I’d get a million dollars if I guessed her age right, I would’ve said 65. Honestly.
I asked her what the secret was. She just said:
“I like to create and take care of things, to work with my hands, to stay active. I never really think about my age.”
So simple. So natural.
Maybe that’s why it’s so hard. It seems too easy.
